The Mid-Atlantic region is prepping for fall. Cooler weather is rolling into the area in a few weeks. What a perfect time to prep your home for fall!
Clean or Replace Gutters. Hire a service to clear your gutters or do it yourself. Remove leaves, nests, and debris from gutters and check for leaks.
Fertilize Your Lawn. If you want to keep your lawn looking great in the spring and summer, you need to prep it for the fall and winter. Roots are still active when the grass isn’t growing, so applying fertilizer will prevent winter damage.
Inspect Trees Around Your Home. Check for damaged limbs that may break or that are too close to power lines or the roof.
Clean the Fireplace. If you have a wood fireplace and use it often, have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional.
Check for Drafts. Heat loss through windows is responsible for 25-30 percent of heating energy use, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Drain Your Outdoor Faucets. Drain garden hoses and disconnect from the outside spigots. Shut off exterior faucets, and if you have an older home, you may need to turn off the valve inside your home. Store hoses in a dry place so any residual water won’t freeze.

Check Your Batteries. Once a year you should check to make sure all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices are working.
